An indirect directory is a directory whose purpose is to store
"links" to entries in other directories, so that changes made to
the entries do not have to be reported on several directories.
The directory just stores the names of the directories accepted,
and a list of new IDs, built using the directory ID and the entry
ID, and adding a slash between the two IDs. For instance, the
entry test stored in the members directory will be stored
as members/test in the indirect directory.
An indirect directory is typically used in a personal address
book, to store personal contacts found in the members directory of
the site.
The indirect directory properties store the IDs of the directories
it refers to, and also the list of entries to link to. All the
possible entries (e.g. all the entries of the directories
accepted) are also available, so that the indirect directory can
be managed through the ZMI interface, by manipulating a multiple
selection. When an entry is no longer in the directory it refers
to, the entry is still in the list, but the None value is returned
when calling for the entry.
The entries are retrieved from the directory it refers to, by
using its adapters. The search is made by performing the search on
the directory it refers to, using the same search criteria, and
then filtering on the search results by removing entries that are
not in the list of entries the indirect directory links to.
When adding or deleting entries to/from the indirect directory,
the actual real entries stored in the directory it refers to are
not manipulated. It is just the list of entry IDs that is
manipulated. An error is raised when the user tries to add an
entry that already exists in the indirect directory, or when
he/she tries to delete an entry that is not in the indirect
directory.
The schema used should be the same for the indirect directory, and
the directories it refers to.
The layout used should also be the same, except that:
All widgets, except the one storing the ID should be hidden in
layout modes create and edit.
The better way to set the widget storing the ID is to set it as
a "CPS Directory Entry Widget", using a vocabulary with type
"CPS Indirect Directory Vocabulary", with the name of the
indirect directory in the "directory" property, and with popup
mode "search". This widget will present the entries accepted in
the directory. It should also be read only in edit mode to
prevent errors: there is no point in editing a reference to the
actual entry.
It would be even better if this widget, in create mode, would
not present to the user entries that are already stored in the
indirect directory.
